One Parent Families' response to John Hutton’s speech:

15/09/06 Chris Pond, Chief Executive said:

"John Hutton is right to say that, for most, lone parenthood is not a life-style choice but the result of relationship breakdown. During that time in their lives when people are bringing up children on their own (a stage that lasts on average 5 years) they need support and not stigma. The main reason that their children have fewer life chances is because twice as many are in poverty.

"The Secretary of State is also right to say that work is the best route out of poverty, and that more efforts must be made to help people balance work and caring. Most lone parents say they would like to work if the right job - and child-care - was available. That's why One Parent Families works with partners such as Marks and Spencer, Barclaycard and ASDA to help hundreds of lone parents into work every year. "

But, he added, "there are often reasons why people can't work, however much they would like to: a quarter of lone parents are caring for a child who is long-term sick or disabled and a quarter are disabled themselves. These lone parents need support and encouragement, not tougher sanctions if they make a choice to stay at home with their kids".
