11/12/06 Responding to today's Conservative party report, Breakdown Britain, Chief Executive of One Parent Families Chris Pond said:

"We welcome the report's recognition that lone parenthood "is rarely a lifestyle choice" but lone parents will reserve judgement on whether the Conservative party's war against them is over until they see policies for tackling low income and deprivation, whatever the family type. Conservative proposals to favour couples through the tax system suggest there is still an appetite within the party for measures that would do little to tackle poverty, while running the risk of stigmatising lone parents and their children."

"Children do not inevitably fare worse because they live in a one parent family. There is no proven causal link between lone -parenthood itself and long-term poorer outcomes for children in one-parent families but there is extensive evidence of the damaging effects of poverty."
