One Parent Families responds to John Hutton speech

18/12/06 One Parent Families welcomes the Government's forthcoming review of its welfare-to-work strategy - announced today by Secretary of State for Work and Pensions John Hutton - but warned against any move to impose any further benefit conditionality on lone parents.

Chief Executive of the charity Chris Pond said:

"The Government is right to revisit its strategy for increasing lone parent employment but the emphasis will need to be on how to help lone parents to stay in a job once they have one, including tackling low skills and providing more help with childcare."

"The Government states its priorities as tackling child poverty and providing the best start for children but research from America shows that imposing tough penalties on lone parents hurts their children's outcomes. Lone parents need more support to get and keep jobs that lift them out of poverty not tougher sanctions in a system that already places substantial requirements on them to stay in touch with employment services."
