Charity welcomes minister's support for one parent families

27/02/07 One Parent Families welcomes Education Secretary Alan Johnson's comments on the family and his recognition of the realities of lone parenthood.

Commenting on the Minister's speech, Head of policy at One Parent Families Kate Bell said:

"Lone parents will welcome the Minister's recognition that although they did not choose their situation, they are raising their children just as successfully as couple-families. Positive policy proposals for engaging separated fathers with their children would be welcome as would more support for couples who want help with their relationship. The Minister is right to warn against favouring couples through the tax system as this would not help couples to stay together and would instead run the risk of stigmatising lone parents and their children.

"The era of blaming single parents will be behind us when there is across-the board, unequivocal commitment to policies that focus on the needs of children rather than on family structure."

Most lone parents have been married and wanted their marriages to last, Ms Bell added. "The vast majority of lone parents are not feckless teenagers but ordinary women and men, most of whom are in their thirties and who are usually juggling work with doing their very best for their children."
