Tax Credit e-bulletin 2
About this e-bulletin

We have produced this bulletin for those who have attended or will be attending our Lone Parent Tax Credit course, and for others who work with lone parents and are interested in tax credits.

Every two months we will keep you up to date with the main news stories around tax credits as well as providing you with useful reminders and tips. Our useful resources section will point you to where you can get further help and information for you and your clients

To help us improve the bulletin and make it more useful for you we would appreciate any comments or suggestions you have. Please email info@oneparentfamilies.org.uk and let us know what you think.

News round up

Delay in transfer of Income Support/Jobseeker claimants to Child Tax Credit

On 21 October 2004 the Paymaster General, Dawn Primarolo, announced that the transfer that was planned to start in October 2004 will now start 'in the course of next year' that is, after April 2005. Transfer of Income Support/Jobseeker claimants to Child Tax Credit

Reminder for self-employed clients to send final income details

The deadline for renewing tax credit claims has now passed but self-employed clients should be reminded that if they still need to provide confirmed income figures, the deadline is 31 January 2oo5. Also remember that once the claim is renewed, clients are still obliged to report certain changes to the Inland Revenue and that while some changes don't have to be reported, it may be beneficial for the client to do so.

Improvements to tax credit award notices

The current award notices do not do much to help lone parents or their advisers keep track of a tax credit claim, and it is not surprising that so many people have been overpaid tax credits without realising because they did not understand the information that was sent to them.

To attempt to remedy this problem the Inland Revenue are working on improvements to the current award notices but, due to the complexities of their computer system, the newly designed versions will not be introduced until October 2005. Help with understanding award notices.

Free tax credits training

These programmes are run by One Parent Families and are a must for voluntary sector practitioners working with lone parents. Following the success of our one-day Lone Parent Tax Credit courses over the past two years we are now in the process of planning a new schedule of courses for the New Year. We will also be running Level 2 courses for people wanting to develop their knowledge in specific areas. Details will be published on our website. Information about future courses

...STOP PRESS... New date for One Parent Families' National Conference

We have moved the date of our National conference to October 13 2005. The decision to move comes in light of heightened media speculation about a spring general election and our desire to ensure that we provide our members and delegates with a day that fulfils all the expectations of previous years. For further information please contact Celia Joseph: celia@oneparentfamilies.org.uk
