News round up

Working Tax Credit for approved domestic childcare from April 2005
From April 2005, clients will now be able to claim the childcare element of Working Tax Credit for childcare in the child's home, or for over 7-year-olds, on other domestic premises if the childcarer is approved under the new Childcare Approval Scheme and is not related to the child. For information about the scheme and who counts as a relative see www.surestart.gov.uk/childcareapproval.
Increase in childcare element of Working Tax Credit from April 2005
As part of the Government's ten-year strategy for childcare and early years, they have announced that as well as raising the amount of childcare costs people can claim a proportion of, the percentage of costs they can claim will also rise. From April 2005 the amount of costs which can be claimed for under the Childcare Tax Credits will increase to £175 a week for one child, and £300 for two or more. From April 2006, the childcare element will meet 80 per cent of costs instead of the current 70 per cent.
 New tax credit appeal regulations
These have been in force since 21 December 2004, and include the removal of the power of appeal tribunals to strike out misconceived appeals and a right to an oral hearing if the appellant completes a form for the clerk to the appeal tribunal to say this is what they want. The regulations also confirm that there is a right of appeal against a decision that a benefit claim is defective. You can view Social Security, Child Support and Tax Credits (Decisions and Appeals) Amendment Regulations 2004 (SI.No.3368/2004) at www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2004/20043368.htm
