Holidays 2008: the guide for lone parents

If you have school-age children it's tempting to avoid peak prices and crowds by taking your holiday during term time but it can be disruptive for your child to miss school. If you have to take your holiday during the school term, you should consider the following:
  • Try to avoid critical times of the school year, such as the start of terms and examination times.
  • Contact the school at the earliest opportunity and discuss it with them - they may not authorise your child's absence from school for a family holiday.
  • Government guidance states that schools should not authorise more than ten school days' absence for holidays in total in a school year, unless there is a very good reason for doing so.
  • If your child is on holiday for longer than ten days, it may be possible for the school to set work so that your child does not fall too far behind. Discuss and negotiate this before you go on holiday.
  • If you take your child on holiday without the school's permission, the school may refer this to the local education authority.
