One Parent Families initiated the FamilySafe project because of the number of calls its helpline receives from lone parents whose children use, or threaten to use, violence.

Having children with threatening or violent behaviour is not specific to lone parents, nor does it have to be as a result of a break-up. However, what is different is that the lone parent will often have to deal with this problem on her/his own and can feel very isolated. This feeling can be compounded by both the lack of and the inaccessibility of support services for dealing with such problems.

The main emphasis of the evaluation has been in contacting lone parents who received telephone guidance sessions, usually via two or three follow-up telephone interviews, for a year or more after the guidance sessions ended.
