Will I have to pay course fees?

Updated 18 August 2008

Also see Help from New Deal for Lone Parents under Financial help while you are studying.

If you are a student from abroad ask your further education provider's admissions department for information about international student fees and contact UKCISA for specialist advice - see Further help and information.

If you are aged 16 to 19 years
In England you do not have to pay fees if you are aged under 19 on the 31 August before you enrol for the course. In Wales you do not have to pay fees while you are aged 16 to 18.

If you are 19 or over

You will not have to pay fees if the course you're doing leads to your first level 2 qualification, that is, the equivalent of five GCSEs at grades A-C, an intermediate GNVQ or NVQ level 2. Check with your college if your course qualifies.

Otherwise, many colleges and other further education providers will not charge tuition fees if you:
  • receive Income Support, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance; or
  • receive Working Tax Credit and your yearly gross income (that is, before you pay any tax or National Insurance) is less than £15,050. Your actual income may be more than this - the income that is counted is detailed in your award notice from the Tax Credit Office.

Individual Learning Account Wales
This can help with course fees and books (if purchased through your learning provider) if you are on a low income and do not already have a qualification above 4-5 GCSEs, grade A*-C or equivalent. For more information, contact Learn Direct on 0800 100 900.
