Holidays 2008: the guide for lone parents

Financial help may be available from grant-giving trusts or other organisations. You can search for any charities or trusts that may be able to help by:

calling the Association of Charity Officers' Helpline on 01707 651 777;
searching on the Association of Charity Officers website www.aco.uk.net; or
looking at A Guide to Grants for Individuals in Need and the Directory of Grant Making Trusts in your local library.

Also check with local church groups, Rotary Clubs and Lions Associations who may arrange low-cost holidays for one parent families. Ask at your public library or Citizens Advice bureau. Assistance is also sometimes available to employees or ex-employees of organisations like British Telecom and the Civil Service. Unions such as Unison and families or widows of members of the armed services may also have access to benevolent funds.

When making applications to organisations, ask for guidelines about applying before you apply. Applications will often need to be supported by a professional who knows your family circumstances, for example, your GP, social worker or health visitor. Also see our 'Useful organisations' page.
