Money if you go abroad

Holidays 2008: the guide for lone parents

  • You might want to ‘spread the risk’ by using a mixture of ways to access you money when abroad – for example, cash, credit/debit card and travellers’ cheques.

  • Shop around for the best prices on foreign currency – look out for commission-free deals but make sure the exchange rate means you are still saving money overall. Also check if the company will buy back excess holiday money and, if so, at what rate.

  • Check that any bank cards you wish to take can be used in the country you are travelling to. Also check for any extra fees and interest that you may have to pay to buy goods and withdraw cash and work out what this is likely to come to in total. Be warned, you may continue to pay interest on cash advances until all the interest on other debt you may have has been paid.

  • Travellers’ cheques can be exchanged for cash when you get to your destination and they can easily be replaced if lost or stolen. Some retailers offer free travellers’ cheques, but you will pay commission when the cheques are cashed.

  • Keep account details and emergency phone numbers for lost and stolen bank cards and travellers’ cheques (along with a note of the cheques’ serial numbers) in a safe place and separately from your cards and cheques so you can phone immediately if anything should happen.
