Holidays 2008: the guide for lone parents
Your passport- You need a full ten-year passport if you are travelling outside the UK, including to other European Union countries.

- The cost of a passport is £172

- Forms are available at selected Post Office branches and Worldchoice travel agents (who also offer a Check and Send service), or by calling the UK Identity and Passport Service on 0870 521 0410. You can also apply and track the progress of your application online on their website, www.passport.gov.uk.

- Applications for renewal passports usually take three weeks but can take longer during peak holiday periods. Online applications can take longer as the form will need to be sent to you to sign and they will not be officially classed as received until they have been sent back signed and with the relevant documentation.

- If this is your first passport in your own name, allow lots more time for your application to be processed as you may be required to attend an interview to establish your identity. These measures are new and at the moment not everyone is being called for an interview, but allow extra time.

Your child's passport- All children under 16 are now required to have their own individual passport. If your child was already included on another valid passport before 5 October 1998, they can continue to travel with the passport holder until they reach the age of 16, that passport expires, or the passport which they are included on is submitted to be amended (at which point an individual passport would need to be applied for), whichever happens the soonest.

- If you are travelling to the US with your children, they will need to have their own individual passport, even if they are currently included on yours or on another valid UK passport.

- Passports for children are valid for five years and cost £46.

- You must have Parental Responsibility to obtain a UK passport for a child. Call the Lone Parent Helpline on 0800 018 5026 to find out who has Parental Responsibility and how it can be acquired. If you are worried about someone who has Parental Responsibility applying for a passport for your child, you can apply to a court to make an order to prevent this from happening.
