Holidays 2008: the guide for lone parents

  • You might want to consider getting together with family, friends or your child's friends' parents for your holiday - that way you could share the costs and also share the holiday experience with other adults as well as your children.

  • You can often get the best deals if you book online, but shop around for the best price and be sure to use a reputable company that is Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) registered. If travelling with an independent tour operator or travel organiser always check that they have a valid Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (ATOL) number.

  • Look out for possible holiday deals, and always ask if any extras such as free insurance or free child places are on offer. Some travel companies offer special 'lone parent deals' and/or may waive a single room supplement. Always check if these holidays are good value overall.

  • Choose a place that has activities that are suited to the ages of your children. Ask if children's clubs or crèche facilities are available at your destination. If your child has special needs you can book with an organisation that caters specifically for their needs. See 'Useful organisations' below for details.

  • Read online customer reviews of the place you are visiting and the company you book with. Ask your travel agent or other provider to see a directory called the Gazetteer, which gives a factual, honest and unbiased opinion of most holiday accommodation.
