Benefits changes 2008
I am studying or training, or want to study or train, and my youngest child is or will be aged over 12 in November. What will happen to my benefits?
If you are already studying or training when the rules are introduced, the Government has said that you will be treated as if the old rules applied for the duration of your course, or until your youngest child reaches 16, whichever is earliest. If you are thinking of taking up a course you may want to do this before the rules change in November.
Once the new rules apply, if you are classed as a full-time student, you will not be entitled to Jobseeker's Allowance until the end of your course. However, you may be able to claim Jobseeker's Allowance during the summer vacation if you are available for work.
If you are classed as a part-time student, you may be able to claim if:- the hours you are studying are outside the times you have agreed with your Personal Adviser that you are available to work; or
- you say you are willing to change the hours you are studying or give up the course if a job becomes available.

If you are on a ‘qualifying course', or receiving a training allowance agreed by Jobcentre Plus, you should be treated as available for work. For more information about this and other types of financial help you may be entitled to as a student, ring the Lone Parent Helpline.
