A guide for lone parents who have applied for maintenance through the Child Support Agency (CSA)

This factsheet deals with:
  • what happens if there is a change in circumstances;
  • how to challenge Child Support Agency (CSA) decisions; and
  • how to complain if you have received a poor service from the CSA.

Glossary

Appeal: means asking the Appeals Service to change a decision, they are independent of the CSA.
Non-resident parent (NRP): the parent who lives apart from the children for whom maintenance is being claimed.
Parent with care (PWC): the parent who lives with and has the day-to-day care of the child/ren.
Revision: asking the CSA to look at a decision again to see if it has been made correctly. The new decision can take effect from the date of the original decision.
Special payments: these are payments the CSA may make in exceptional circumstances to compensate someone who, for example, has suffered financial loss because of a CSA mistake or because there was a long delay in dealing with the case.
Supersession: means asking the CSA for a decision to be replaced with another, for example, because there has been a change or because you have missed the time limit for asking for a revision or making an appeal. The new decision will take effect from a later date than the original decision.
