Money during maternity and adoption factsheet

This is a one-off payment of £500 payable if you receive:

Income Support;
income-based Jobseeker's Allowance;
Working Tax Credit - which includes the disability or severe disability element;
Pension Credit; or
if you receive more than the family element of Child Tax Credit - £545 a year or £1,090 a year if you have a child under 1.

You can claim from 11 weeks before the week your baby is due, until 3 months after the birth. Claim as soon as possible after the birth (your claim may initially be refused if you are not yet receiving more than the family element of Child Tax Credit), then, if you are awarded more than the family element of Child Tax Credit, inform Jobcentre Plus straight away and they can revise the decision and award you the grant.

If you are adopting a baby, you must claim within 3 months of the adoption and the child should be under 12 months old at the time of the claim.

Claim on form SF100, available from Jobcentre Plus. Your doctor, midwife or health visitor must also sign the form confirming that you have received advice about your own and your baby's health and welfare needs.
