Tax credits when your circumstances change factsheet

Child Tax Credit will continue to be paid for a child until the 1st of September following their 16th birthday.If the child has left school but is under 18, you can continue to claim for up to 20 weeks if they are registered for work or training with the Careers Service, Connexions or Jobcentre Plus.

Child Tax Credit can be paid for young people in non-advanced education and certain types of training up to age 20, but the Tax Credit Offi ce will assume that your child is leaving school unless you tell them otherwise. If they are staying on at school or take up training you need to report this as a change of circumstance.
