Benefits if someone in the family is ill, disabled or a carer

If you do not work, or work under 16 hours a week: a lone parents’ guide to benefits and tax credits factsheet

If you are unable to work because of illness or disability, you could be entitled to either Statutory Sick Pay from your employer or Incapacity Benefit from Jobcentre Plus.
  • If you or your child have a long-tem health problem or are disabled, claim Disability Living Allowance - get the form from your local Jobcentre Plus office or call the Department for Work and Pensions' Benefit Enquiry Line on 0800 882 200. If you qualify, your other benefits and tax credits may go up, so check you are receiving the right amounts.

  • You may be entitled to direct payments and other help from social services. Contact your local authority and ask for an assessment.

  • If you regularly care for someone who is disabled or has a long-term health problem, you may be entitled to Carer's Allowance. You may also be entitled to Carer's Premium as part of Income Support or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, but get advice on whether the disabled person's benefit is affected. Claim from your local Jobcentre Plus office or online at www.dwp.gov.uk.
