Benefits and tax credits: how does it all add up?

If you do not work, or work under 16 hours a week: a lone parents’ guide to benefits and tax credits factsheet

This lone parent is over 18, lives in rented accommodation, does not work and does not have any other income. No one in the family has a disability or long-term health problem or is caring for somebody who does.

The following are the weekly amounts payable for the family's day-to-day living expenses. Please note: the amounts shown are the 2006/07 rates, valid until 5 April 2007. These are likely to rise slightly in 2007/08.

Lone parent with one dependent child
Child Benefit £17.45
Income Support £57.45
Child Tax Credit £44.30
Total £119.20

Lone parent with two dependent children
Child Benefit £29.15
Income Support £57.45
Child Tax Credit £78.15
Total £164.75

Note

A higher amount of Child Tax Credit is payable if you have a child under 1 year.
  • If you qualify for Income Support, you can also get the maximum amount of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit, which should cover all or most of your rent and Council Tax.

  • Income Support and other means-tested benefits may be reduced if you have other income, for example, child maintenance or part-time earnings. For more information about this call the Lone Parent Helpline
