Is there any extra financial help for lone parents who move into paid work?

Benefits Changes factsheet 2008

Yes, this includes:
  • an extra four weeks of benefit for your housing costs (Housing Benefit/help with mortgage interest and Council Tax Benefit) if you meet certain conditions;
  • an extra ‘In Work Credit' of £40 (or £60 in London) a week, on top of wages and tax credits for the first year that you are in work, if you have been claiming benefits for more than 12 months and you take up a job; and
  • an ‘In Work Emergency Fund' which can help you with unexpected  financial costs in the first 6 months of work.

You may also be entitled to Working Tax Credit if you work for more than 16 hours a week.

For more information about these and other types of help call the Lone Parent Helpline on 0800 018 5026.
