How to find out about courses, education and training...

Reviewed 21/09/06

Fancy doing some yoga or maybe a dance class? Or do you fancy taking a qualification? Would you like to know your way round the computer? Always wondered whether you could be a jazz singer?

If you are interested in doing something around learning, exercise or an arty subject but don't know where to start looking for courses in your area, you may find the list of web addresses below a useful starting point.

The following websites are specialising on education:

www.hotcourses.com

www.learndirect.co.uk

There are also some general websites which include sections on education such as the BBC website:

www.bbc.co.uk/learning/coursesearch/returning

And there is also the up-my-street website which will tell you whether there are, for example, adult education colleges in your area:

www.upmystreet.com - enter your postcode then scroll down to click on 'Further & higher education' under 'Education & childcare'.

The directgov website gives you more general information about different learning styles and potential funding sources:

www.direct.gov.uk/educationandlearning/adultlearning

The Educational Grants Advisory Service (EGAS) offers guidance and advice on funding to students aged 16+, particularly those who are disadvantaged:

www.egas-online.org

UKCOSA provides support to international students and UK students studying abroad:

www.ukcosa.org.uk

Some local lone parent organisations, for example Scoopaid in Sheffield (www.scoopaid.org.uk) and the Single Parent Action Network in Bristol (www.spanuk.org.uk) are running or will know about training courses in your area and are worth contacting. For more information about local organisations, call the Lone Parent Helpline on 0800 018 5026.
