Single parents are no longer treated as applying to the Child Support Agency when they claim benefit

Since 14 July 2008, if you claim Income Support or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, you are no longer treated as also applying to the Child Support Agency to calculate and collect child maintenance. Instead you are free to choose whether to use the Child Support Agency to calculate and collect child maintenance or not. You should be given information about the different options for setting up arrangements for child maintenance.

If you had a reduced amount of benefit because you did not cooperate with the Child Support Agency, your benefit should have been increased to the full amount from 14 July 2008.

If you are already receiving Income Support or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance and are using the Child Support Agency, from 27 October 2008 you will no longer have to use the Child Support Agency to deal with your child maintenance if you don't want to.
