Will I be able to claim benefits if my youngest child is aged 12 or over and I leave my job?

Benefits changes factsheet 2008

If you lose your job because of misconduct, or leave your job voluntarily without showing that you had ‘just cause',  the Jobcentre  can decide that you should not be paid Jobseeker's Allowance for a period of time.

The Jobcentre will have to show that you left your job voluntarily, but you have to demonstrate that you had ‘just cause' to do so in order be able to claim Jobseeker's Allowance.

However, if you leave a job because of a lack of appropriate affordable childcare, you will not be penalised.

Contact the Lone Parent Helpline (0800 018 5026) for more information.
