Disability and lone parenthood

October 2004

In 2004, Gabrielle Preston from Disability Alliance undertook research at the Centre for Analysis for Social Exclusion at the London School of Economics.

Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the study was based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 20 mothers whose children are disabled or have special needs, 8 of whom are lone parents.

Here, Gabrielle reports on the research and looks at why poverty, disability and single parenthood often come together.

Helter Skelter: Families, Disabled Children and the Benefit System by Gabrielle Preston will be published by the ESRC Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion at the London School of Economics later this year. A copy of the report will be available from their website: http://sticerd.lse.ac.uk/case/
