But how do families spend additional income?

Disability and lone parenthood - from Together Magazine, issue 4

The lone parents who participated in this research use their child’s DLA to deal with both social and educational problems that are a direct consequence of their condition or impairment. Saving for the future is viewed as particularly important, but in practice is difficult or impossible to achieve. Additional income is primarily used to improve the lives of their children - and indeed the whole family - on a day-to-day basis.

Children who are disabled or have special needs often can’t play outside with their friends. They may spend a disproportionate amount of time at home, so creating a welcoming environment for the whole family is clearly important. Keeping a child entertained is often difficult - particularly as they get older

- and additional income can make all the difference. ‘Mainly it’s ...taking him out and entertaining him ...things like outings to the swimming pool ...although he’s 13 he needs the stimulation.’

A rise in income often results in an increase in self-esteem for both parent and child. ‘I feel a member of society again. I feel I’m providing better for my children. I’ve been given back a bit of self respect and self worth.’
