Assessments and Statements of Special Educational Needs in England and Wales

Some disabled children will have difficulty accessing the usual curriculum. This may be because ofa learning disability, behavioural problems or because they have a physical disability which makes learning or participating in education more difficult than other children.

You or the school can request that an assessment of special educational needs is carried out to ensure that any additional help is put in place to maximise your child's access to education and other opportunities schools offer.

The stages of assessment (see accompanying pages) are set out in the relevant Special Educational Needs Code of Practice. These detail the key principles for identifying and assessing Special Educational Needs (SEN) - different codes apply to education in Wales and England but many of the key principles are the same.

Does having an assessment mean my child will not stay in a mainstream school?

The Special Educational Needs Code of Practice states that if you wish your child to be educated in a mainstream school, this should only be refused if 'the child's inclusion would be incompatible with the efficient education of other children.
