Leisure opportunities

If you have a child with a disability and/or health condition, you need to think about the type of play opportunities your child may be interested in.

These may range from wanting access on a regular basis to a facility such a playgroup, music or drama groups, adventure playground or holiday playscheme, through to occasional use of weekend clubs or toy libraries.

The other factor to consider is whether the activity you want access to offers the opportunity for siblings to join in. An increasing number of organisations now offer integrated play so that the whole family can take part.

Many parks are starting to benefit from regeneration grants and are developing more accessible play areas as well as other play and recreational activities, particularly during school holiday periods.

Schools often run playschemes during holiday periods and are also potentially good sources of information about other play and recreational projects such as swimming clubs and sports activities.

You should be aware however, that for some activities, fees are likely to be charged.

Direct payments

If you are unable to find appropriate leisure activities you may wish to consider applying for a direct payment to purchase help for your child to attend a local club or playscheme. For more information see 'Help from social services' in The Lone Parent Guide to Caring for a Child with Additional Needs.

'I found out about a local music group for children with learning disabilities from another parent at my daughter's school.

I love watching her discover all the new things she can do and everybody has so much fun'
