Organising an Event - Tips and Ideas

TOP FUNDRAISING IDEAS... - Stick to what you know: Choose a fundraising activity that you know well - don't try and organise a football event if you know nothing about football!
 - Timing is everything: Give yourself enough time to plan an event and make a timeline of what needs to be done and by when. Choose your date and venue carefully (so avoiding any other events on that date).
 - Money, money, money: Work out what your income and costs will be before you decide to proceed. Be sure that your fundraising activity will actually raise some funds!
 - Failing to plan is planning to fail: Make contingency plans so you have an alternative in mind or other options should anything go wrong.
- With a little help from your friends: Think about how many people/friends you will need to help you. Consider setting up a committee to work on the activity.
- Spread the word: Think about what resources you will need to publicise your activity and make sure that you do it well in advance. Remember to use all forms of publicity, including local media if possible.
- Business sense: Contact local businesses for help and donations, prizes, paper for posters or use of premises. You know it makes sense!
- Keep it within the law: Make sure everything that you are doing is both legal and safe. THis is our responsibility, so if you are not sure about anything, check it out with us first.
- Never trust the British weather: If you are organising an outdoor event you might want to investigate insurance policies for safety and event cancellation.
- Always remember your pleases and thank yous: Always ask people to do/give you things nicely. Make sure that you thank those that help or give you money. They will feel appreciated, and may even help you if you want to do it all over again!

ORGANISING AN EVENT OF YOUR OWN...
If you'd like to raise vital funds for One Parent Families, but have no idea what sort of activity you want to do, we can help. Below are some ideas which you can use. If you have any better ideas then use them, and if you do come up with a really great idea, please let us know.
Auction: Auction things, or just promises. Cajole your friends and family into giving you some really good promises.
Fashion Show: Organise a fashion show if local clothes shops will agree to lend you the latest trends.
Dinner: Have your friends round for a dinner party or a murder mystery as normal, but this time charge them. If you keep the price less than they would spend going out to a restaurant, I am sure they will be happy to pay.
Staying In: This one is quite simple really, so pretty easy to organise. Basically arrange for you and your friends to stay in, and give the money that you would have spent on a night out to charity.
Shaving off your hair/beard etc: If you have had a beard all your life, or you have crazy hair that people are always talking about, see how much people will pay you to shave it off. You could even do it publically so people can watch. Make sure you take plently of before and after photos.
Do something crazy: Get people to pay you to do something crazy like sitting in a bath of baked beans for a certain length of time, or perhaps you and a team of people could cycle non-stop for 48 hours.
Party: Have a party and charge an entrance fee.
Quiz: Organise a pub quiz - people love to show off how much they think they know, so you normally don't even need very good prizes as an incentive.
Housework/Gardening/Car Washing: Hire out your domestic services for those who can't be bothered.
Bag Pack: Organise a bag pack at your local supermarket (with their permission), and get people to donate to you for their troubles.
Sponsored Anything: There is always the classic sponsored silence, which could be great if you are normally a chatterbox.
