The Department for Work and Pensions Child Poverty Strategy: A submission from One Parent Families

November 2006 One Parent Families welcomes the news that the Department for Work and Pensions is renewing its child poverty strategy. Ending the poverty faced by lone parents and their children has always been our first priority, and we have been encouraged by the substantial progress made over the last nine years. We know that meeting the target to halve child poverty by 2010 will be hard. But the importance of fulfilling this first part of the Government's radical promise cannot be overestimated. Meeting the target would send a message that poverty can be tackled when Governments have the will to do so. More importantly, it would mean that around a million more children will have been provided with more opportunities.

Ending this poverty must be the first priority of this Government, and the Department for Work and Pensions has a vital role to play in delivering the commitment.
