Budget 2007 - letter to Rt. Hon Gordon Brown MP

Sent to The Rt. Hon Gordon Brown MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, HM Treasury

02/03/07 We wrote to you recently to set out our priorities for this year's Comprehensive Spending Review, and to stress the importance of tackling poverty for children in one-parent families. We know that decisions taken this year will be vital for ensuring that the Government's ambitious target to halve child poverty will be met. And this Budget represents a key opportunity for setting out the direction of travel and making a real difference to the lives of children and families.

In particular we believe that there are three areas where spending needs to be committed rapidly;

1) Introducing a child maintenance disregard into Income Support.

2) Extending the In Work Emergency Fund across the country to ensure that one off costs do not lead to lone parents dropping out of work.

3) Implementing the Work Related Activity Premium for all lone parents.

I enclose a copy of our Spending Review submission, which discusses these, and other policies that we view as essential, in greater detail. But I have set out below why we think that these measures are essential now.
