Introduction

One Parent Families|Gingerbread (the two charities recently merged) is the leading organisation representing lone parents and their children in the UK and a member of the Campaign to End Child Poverty. There are 3.1 million children living in one parent families in Britain, and they form one quarter of all families.

We welcome the increased attention being paid to issues of poverty and social mobility by all three political parties. Although the situation has improved for lone parents over the past ten years, children growing up in one-parent families still face double the risk of poverty of those who live with both parents, and half of all children living with a lone parent are poor (throughout this submission we use the widely accepted definition of poverty as living below 60 per cent of median income after housing costs). Lone parents and their children too often also face stigma and prejudice.

lone parent families are of course affected by all of the areas mentioned in the call for evidence - education policy, health policy, employment housing and family life are all issues of interest and importance to lone parents and their children. In this submission however we concentrate on three areas that are of particular importance to this group; the impact of family formation on outcomes for children, the impact of financial poverty, and how policy can better promote family well being by addressing the impact of conflict on children.
