A new deal for welfare: empowering people to work

 
 

April 2006 Nine out of ten lone parents say they want to work, although not all do so immediately. We believe that paid work can be a route out of poverty and have therefore been supportive of the Government's efforts to help more lone parents into employment. But paid work is not always the right choice for lone parents, and we would reject any approach that seeks to pressurise them into jobs they may be unable to keep. We think that lone parents must be supported into sustainable employment that lifts them out of poverty. Here, we discuss what we believe to be the best way forward.
