Budget submission 2005: Deliver on Child Support

March 2005 The Child Support Agency is a vital part of the Government’s programme to tackle child poverty, as reflected in the Department for Work and Pensions’ PSA target to increase to 60 per cent the proportion of parents with care on Income Support and income-based Jobseeker's Allowance who receive child maintenance for their children.

The recent report of the Work and Pensions Select Committee however demonstrates that this target is at serious risk – in fact the agency appears to be going backwards. Data for March 2003 put the figure for the number of parents with care on appropriate benefits receiving maintenance at 25%. By February 2004 this had actually fallen to 21%, and by May 2004 it was only standing at 22%.

It is imperative that the Agency implements the recommendations of the Committee’s report as quickly as possible, to finally get the Child Support Agency to deliver to lone parents. We look to the Treasury to support them in the rapid action that will be needed to rescue the Agency from its current state of crisis.
