Women and Work Commission: Response from One Parent Families

April 2005 One Parent Families welcomes this opportunity to respond to the Women and Work Commission's enquiry into the pay gap.

There are 1.75 million lone parents in Britain today, and nine out of ten of them are women. Much of the persistent poverty faced by lone parents stems from or is exacerbated by their status as women.

Our response discusses the barriers faced by lone parents in accessing employment, in retaining and progressing in that employment, and in accessing opportunities to train and develop their skills. Measures to address these problems for lone parents are likely to improve the labour market position of all women.
