Remember lone parents in the next parliament!

May 2005 One Parent Families has written to all new MPs asking them to remember lone parents in the next parliament. We sent them a copy of our publication One Parent Families Today: The Facts - so that they get the real facts and figures about lone parents and their children. The letter we sent follows:
MP, House of Commons, London 12th May 2005
Remember lone parents in the next parliament!
I'm writing firstly, to congratulate you on your election to parliament, and secondly, to encourage you to contact our charity for any briefing you need on the issues affecting lone parents.

One Parent Families is the leading campaigning organisation representing the needs of lone parents and their children. We work to combat the poverty, isolation and stigma that many lone parents and their children still face. The enclosed publication, One Parent Families Today: The Facts sets out the facts and figures about lone parents in Britain today, and aims to counter the stereotypes. We hope you will find it useful in your work.

One fact that stands out is that too many lone parents and their children are still living in poverty. We wrote to our 3,000 members to ask them about their priorities for politicians in the new parliament, and tackling child poverty came out as their highest concern. Over a third of our members said that their top priority was to end child poverty by increasing the Child Tax Credit.

We look forward to working with you in the new parliament, and would be happy to provide any briefing materials you might find useful.

Once again, congratulations on your election.

 Yours sincerely

 Nicola Simpson, Chief Executive.
