Manifesto 06/07 - Our goals for the future - Ensure lone parents have real choices about balancing work and family life

Today, 56.6 per cent of lone parents are working, although 9 out of 10 say they want to work.

Yet inflexible working practices and a lack of tailored support prevent many of them from getting the jobs they want. Moreover the gains from moving into work after meeting childcare and other costs can be small.

To give lone parents real choices about how they balance work and family life, the Government must ensure that there is better training provision for lone parents, a more flexible working culture and an improvement in the financial rewards from work through an increase in the National Minimum Wage.
