Manifesto 06/07 - Our goals for the future - Support, advice and appropriate services

Lone parents need advice and support when they become a lone parent, and continued good advice when they fall into difficulties such as debt. Lone parents face particularly high levels of advice need, and at present find many of their needs unmet.

Public services must also be sensitive to the needs of one parent families and recognise that lone parenthood is now a stage in the lifecycle that many children will go through - it has been estimated that one-third to one-half of all children will spend some time in a one parent family.

The Government must therefore ensure that lone parents have access to advice and good quality services in order to minimise the impact of the poverty and disadvantage many face, and to ensure that children and their parents achieve the best outcomes possible.
