Introduce a guaranteed system of child maintenance

Manifesto 04/05 - Our goals for the future

Only just over three in ten lone parents get any child maintenance from their child's other parent. Where child maintenance is due to be collected nearly half do not get full payment. Where child maintenance is paid it forms an important part of a lone parents income, and has a strong positive influence on the take up of paid work.

One Parent Families believes that the importance of maintenance payments to improving family incomes means that the Government must move towards a guaranteed system of maintenance as found in several European countries where a minimum level of support is paid to the parent with care. In the meantime it is vital that the Government works more effectively and efficiently to deliver for lone parents now.
