Manifesto 06/07 - Benefits and tax

Lone parents' top priority: Increase the Child Tax Credit by £10 by 2010.
  • Continue to increase Child Benefit and the child element of Child Tax Credit in real terms.
  • Commit to up-rating the family element of Child Tax Credit and the lone parent and couple elements of Working Tax Credit in line with earnings.
  • Improve the administration of tax credits and introduce an independent right of appeal of the decision to recover an overpayment of tax credits.
  • Ensure Jobcentre Plus and HM Revenue and Customs deliver high-quality information and advice and ensure that people understand the working of the new scheme.
  • Simplify the system for claiming tax credits for childcare.
  • Reform of the Social Fund to provide affordable credit accompanied by the introduction of grants to cover the costs of essential items for those on low incomes.
  • Significantly improve standards for administering Housing Benefit so that decisions about entitlement are usually made within two weeks.
  • Following successful evaluation of the SHA pathfinders, make plans to implement an integrated Housing Credit by 2007/08.

Goal: End poverty in one-parent families.
