Manifesto 06/07 - Children and childcare

Lone parents' top priority: Introduce a children's centre in every area.
  • Ensure a guaranteed childcare place for every lone parent living in a deprived neighbourhood as a first step to ensuring a childcare place for every child who needs one.
  • Increase the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit to cover the full cost of childcare or at least 90% of it.
  • Introduce regional top-ups for childcare costs, especially for London.
  • Increase the maximum amount of childcare costs payable for large families by meeting a fixed amount of costs per child rather than in total.
  • Introduce a childcare costs run on by allowing the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit to carry on for up to four weeks during a period of temporary unemployment so that childcare arrangements are not interrupted.
  • Extend help with childcare costs through tax credits to more couple families, for example, by reducing the hours the second earner needs to work from 16 down to 8. This is part of the life-cycle approach to tackling poverty in one-parent families.
  • Carry out more research into childcare needs and issues for lone parents with a disability.

Goal: Ensure a high-quality childcare place for every child.
