Manifesto 06/07 - Supporting families

Lone parents' top priority: Increase the information and advice available to lone parents.
  • Implement the 'parents direct' helpline to provide, or signpost to, advice not just on employment rights but also on benefits and tax credits.
  • Adequate funding of independent advice agencies and helplines, and the Community Legal Service, to meet demand.
  • Provide better debt advice to parents both in and out of work.
  • Recognise the diversity of family structure in public policy-making and acknowledge the hard work and successes of one-parent families.
  • Ensure that the reform of the Legal Aid system does not affect lone parents' access to representation, especially in domestic violence and child contact cases.
  • Ensure that any move towards greater transparency of the family courts also includes solid guarantees of anonymity to protect the privacy of children and their parents.
  • Put resources into mediation and advice services for couples who separate or divorce.
  • Help children stay in touch with both parents by encouraging contact arrangements which have been shown to benefit children, while ensuring that children and parents at risk are protected.

Goal: Ensure that families have access to quality support and advice, and appropriate services that meet their needs.
