Lone parents' top priority: Increase the information and advice available to lone parents.

Implement the 'parents direct' helpline to provide, or signpost to, advice not just on employment rights but also on benefits and tax credits.
Adequate funding of independent advice agencies and helplines, and the Community Legal Service, to meet demand.
Provide better debt advice to parents both in and out of work.
Recognise the diversity of family structure in public policy-making and acknowledge the hard work and successes of one-parent families.
Ensure that the reform of the Legal Aid system does not affect lone parents' access to representation, especially in domestic violence and child contact cases.
Ensure that any move towards greater transparency of the family courts also includes solid guarantees of anonymity to protect the privacy of children and their parents.
Put resources into mediation and advice services for couples who separate or divorce.
Help children stay in touch with both parents by encouraging contact arrangements which have been shown to benefit children, while ensuring that children and parents at risk are protected.

Goal: Ensure that families have access to quality support and advice, and appropriate services that meet their needs.
