Manifesto 06/07: Did you know?

  • Contrary to what you might read in the papers lone parents come from all walks of life and backgrounds. Ask anyone and they will know someone who is bringing up their child or children on their own.
  • Today there are 1.9 million lone parents caring for over 3 million children - that's one quarter of all British families.
  • Only 3 per cent of lone parents are teenage parents.
  • One in ten lone parents are fathers caring for their children.
  • The average age of a lone parent is 35.
  • The most common routes into lone parenthood are traumatic and very rarely chosen: divorce and separation, domestic violence or the death of a partner.
  • Nearly half of lone parents live in poverty and many more are at the greatest risk of poverty in the UK.
