Ask your MP to support stopping changes to lone parent benefits

November 2008

The government is introducing changes to lone parents benefits so that people with younger children have to look for work as a condition of claiming benefit. See our factsheet What's happening in Autumn 2008 for more information. Member of Parliament Lynne Jones has now tabled an ‘Early Day Motion' in Parliament to ask for the changes to be stopped, which you can read here:
Lynne Jones' Early Day Motion

You can write to your MP and ask them to support this by going to www.writetothem.org.uk/.

A suggested message to send them is here - or write your own message.

Dear [Name of MP]

I am writing to ask you to sign Early Day Motion Number 2434, on the SOCIAL SECURITY (LONE PARENTS AND MISCELLANEOUS AMENDMENTS) REGULATIONS 2008. This asks the Government to think again before asking lone parents to claim Jobseeker's Allowance and actively seek work.

Most lone parents want to work when the time is right for them and their children, but in this difficult economic climate, the threat of benefit cuts is not the right way to achieve this. I hope that you will show your support for single parents by signing the Early Day Motion.

[You could add a message about your personal experience combining work and family here]

Yours sincerely

[insert name].
