Single Parent Charity calls for more action on skills as Government "personalises" Jobcentre plus

20/05/04 One Parent Families welcomed the Government's review of employment programmes announced today, which is intended to provide more tailored provision to all Jobcentre plus clients, but said that New Deal needs to offer lone parents more chance to study and gain skills.

Director of the charity Kate Green said:

"Only 7% of lone parents get any help with education or training through New Deal for Lone Parents. If the government is to achieve its goals of lifting children out of poverty, getting lone parents into good quality jobs will be essential. The greater flexibility announced today must include allowing lone parents more access to high quality training and skills provision."
