Chancellor's Spending Review: Good news on Childcare but concern over job cuts

12/07/04 National charity One Parent Families applauds the Chancellor's Spending Review announcement of 800 (i) more children's centres as another important step forward in tackling child poverty. But the charity expressed concern that Department for Work and Pensions job cuts could undermine the Government's efforts to deliver employment chances to more lone parents as well as regular and reliable child maintenance payments, both of which are vital in the fight against poverty in one parent families.

Commenting today, acting Director of the charity Andy Keen Downs said: "The commitment to providing 2,500 childcare centres is a stride towards achieving the goal of having a children's centre in every community. Lone parents will welcome today's announcement as evidence of the Chancellor's determination to help them balance work and family life and as a powerful weapon in the fight against child poverty. The Government is right to invest in eradicating child poverty and there is good news today on childcare but we are concerned that Department for Work and Pensions staff cuts could undermine the ability of frontline services to deliver the improved employment chances and regular child maintenance payments which will be crucial to the success of the poverty reduction strategy. "

Notes to Editors

(i) In the Budget the Chancellor set out his commitment to building 1,700 children's Centres by 2008. Today's announcement extends the commitment to 2,500 Centres by 2008. Forty five per cent of all poor children live in one parent families.
