One Parent Families' welcomes Government approach to contact

21/07/04 One Parent Families welcomes the new Green Paper on 'Parental Separation and Children's Needs' in particular its focus on earlier and more effective intervention to help separated parents sort out contact arrangements without becoming embattled in lengthy court procedures.

Acting Director of the charity Andy Keen Downs said:

"We applaud the Government's decision to produce a Green Paper on contact arrangements within separated families and fully welcome the debate that this will generate.   This is a crucial opportunity to have a sensible debate, based on the evidence and inclusive of childrens' voices."

"We are pleased that the Government has maintained its commitment to keeping children's welfare paramount while recognising the need to provide earlier and more effective help for separating parents, most of whom are keen to avoid an adversarial process and put the needs of their children first."

Mr Keen-Downs added:

"It is right to aim for a system that offers speedier procedures for the minority of cases that reach the court, but we are pleased to see that this is being balanced by more support for families and the promise of better processes to investigate cases where domestic violence or abuse may be an issue.

"Many lone parents want the non-resident parent to have more not less contact with their children, and we welcome the government's efforts to provide more effective support for families so that life after separation can work as smoothly as possible for parents and children.'
