One Parent Families welcomes Pre Budget Report measures for parents

02/12/04 One Parent Families welcomes today's Pre Budget announcements aimed at helping lone parents move into work. and at helping parents balance work and family life.   In particular the new investment in childcare, the consultation on extending the right to request flexible working to parents with older children and sick and disabled relatives, the measures to improve skills and the extension of the in-work credit are welcome.

Chief Executive of the charity Nicola Simpson said: "This was a historic radical statement in that families were at the heart of it. The new money for childcare is a significant and important investment and parents will welcome the decision to extend the right to request flexible working to those with older children.  The Chancellor confirmed that he wants to make it possible for more single parents to move into work and many of the measures announced today are a welcome move towards that goal.   The expansion of quality, affordable childcare is terrific news and essential for single parents who want to move into work.  Rolling-out childcare, upskilling parents and expanding access to the £40 weekly in-work credit are all strides towards the Government's target of enabling 70% of single parents to be in work by 2010 ."
