Sophie's battle: developing childcare for children with disabilities

Sophie Ugle won a Daycare Trust award for her local campaign to develop childcare for children with disabilities. Her efforts paid off this summer when her local borough of Kingston upon Thames piloted a full-time specialist holiday club.

Sophie Ugle’s third child – Rachel – was eight months old when she was diagnosed with a severe learning disability . Sophie was married at the time and after a period at home raising her children full time, she returned to work as a nurse, while studying part time.

‘It was during this period that I realised childcare for Rachel was going to be an enormous problem’, she recalls.

The problem got worse when, in 2000, Sophie became a single mum and needed to work full time.

She found there simply wasn’t any childcare for severely disabled children that was provided on the same basis as the care available for able-bodied children.
