Budget 2005 underlines long-term commitment to children

16/03/05 One Parent Families welcomes today’s Budget 2005 which underlines the Chancellor’s commitment to low-income families and to giving the poorest children a decent start in life.

Chief Executive of the charity Nicola Simpson said: "It is good to have the commitment to increasing Child Tax Credit in line with earnings which will protect the poorest children from falling behind and help bring poverty rates down.  Further Child Tax Credit increases will be essential in future years if the Government is to achieve its ambition of halving child poverty by 2010.  Lone parents have fewer assets and savings than most so the promise of extra Child Trust Fund payments is a good way of enabling them to invest money in their children’s future.

"This Budget consolidated the Government’s plans for childcare with positive announcements on extra money for Sure Start and the Parenting Fund.  The Chancellor has moved us a step closer to universal childcare but we must make sure that the new places are flexible and affordable.

"The Chancellor gave welcome confirmation that lone parents will receive a back-to-work bonus for one year after they return to employment. Such  positive welfare to work initiatives must not suffer with the planned civil service staff cuts."
