Disappointing figures on child poverty show need for urgent action

27/03/07 National charity One Parent Families today called for the Government to take urgent action to tackle the worrying increase in child poverty announced in today's Households Below Average Income figures. [1]

Chief executive of the charity Chris Pond says:

"Today's figures showing that 50 per cent of children in one-parent families are still living in poverty emphasise the need for urgent action to get the Government back on track to meet its vital commitment to halve child poverty by 2010.

The disappointing increase in the numbers of children living in poverty underlines the importance of the Government using every lever it can, and this means policies to make work pay, to increase the levels of financial support for all children, and to make sure that child support money gets to the families who need it most.

The child poverty strategy published alongside the figures sets out some positive measures to help lone parents to keep jobs once they get them and improve childcare support, but we will need to see significant further investment if the 2010 target is to be met."

ends.

[1] Today's figures, available at www.dwp.gov.uk/asd/hbai.asp showed an increase of 100,000 children living in poverty (measured as 60 per cent of median income before housing costs).
